Rules of Play

Rules of Play asks what happens when musicians are given a framework — a pulse, a pattern, a set of instructions, or simply a way to begin — and then have to work out what to do with it together. These five works move between extreme precision and real freedom, asking the players to listen, react, negotiate, take risks, and sometimes let go of control entirely. The rules might be fixed, but what happens inside them never quite is.
